Teaching R Controlled Vowels with Bossy R for 1st Grade

Teaching R-controlled vowels (or “bossy R” words) can be tricky for first graders, but with the right approach, it becomes an engaging and rewarding part of phonics instruction. These vowels—ar, er, ir, or, and ur—are unique because the ‘R’ changes the way the vowel sounds. Here’s how you can teach this concept effectively while keeping students engaged and building their confidence in decoding R-controlled words. If you are looking for when to teach this concept check out my scope and sequence.

What is Bossy R?

Bossy R is so bossy! He tells the vowels what to say and makes them go first in the word! This phrase helps students know that the vowel comes first and the R changes the vowel sound.

Step 1: Introduce R Controlled Vowels with Engaging Visuals

Before diving into words, help students understand that when ‘R’ follows a vowel, it takes over and changes the sound. Use anchor charts, mouth formation visuals, and hand motions to demonstrate how the sound shifts. For example, I like to teach the R apARtment. the /ur/ sisters live on the thIRd floor and you go out the doOR.

Step 2: Apply Skills in Context

Decodable texts featuring R-controlled vowels give students meaningful practice. After introducing a pattern, have them read simple sentences and passages that reinforce the concept. This helps them apply their phonics skills in real reading situations. It is also important to practice encoding or spelling for true mastery of skills.

Step 3: Practice and Assess

As students practice R-controlled vowel words, use formative assessments like word reading fluency checks, sentence dictation, and sorting activities to monitor progress. Take note of students who struggle with specific patterns and pull them into small groups for targeted reteaching. This ensures that every student builds mastery before moving on to the next phonics concept.
