Books When you Are Getting Started with the Science of Reading
1. The Knowledge Gap
Amazing book available on Audible as well that takes a hard look at the state of education. Goes into the history of why we have a generation that struggles to read and how it is affecting our society. This is a great book for justifying the WHY of structured literacy.
2. Shifting the Balance
Easy Read Great book to start with or do a book study at your school if they are unfamiliar with the Science of Reading. Includes 6 shifts for K-2 teachers primarily to make to better teach students to read.
3. A Fresh Look at Phonics
Wiley Blevins is a favorite of mine. His book A Fresh Look at Phonics explores common causes why your phonics instruction may not be as effective as you would like and 7 pieces of the puzzle to teach all students to read. Also includes a good scope and sequence.
Books for All the Skills and Rules
4. Speech to Print
Written by Louisa Moats this book is very similar to the instruction in LETRS training since Moats also helped develop it. This is a GREAT alternative to the training if you can’t afford the training or don’t have access to it. Several helpful charts as well!
5. Uncovering the Logic of English
6. Equipped for Reading Success
A three part book by SOR expert David Kilpatrick this is a step by step guide for implementing structured literacy. Be sure to read the first part as it is essential for the WHY.
7. Recipe for Reading
I got this book with my Orton Gillingham training. They use this book for their scope and sequence and several other skills. EDIT: OG has changed their SAS.
But I still love this book! It has so many good reference pages on syllable division, tips and tricks for sounds as well as lists of decodable words, and sentences for dictation.
Diving in Deep
8. Langage at the Speed of Sight
Buckle up buttercup! This book is written by a cognitive neuroscientist. And while he does probably the best possible job at explaining how the brain learns to read it is still very difficult for this average human to read. To be honest I haven’t read the whole thing just parts. It is great for those academics and anyone you are trying to prove the brain science to. I just wish there were Cliff’s notes!
I hope this has given you some new Science of Reading books for teachers to check out from the library, add to your Amazon cart or request to be added to your professional development library at school!
